Do You Need a Food Handlers Card for Shiftsmart?
You may need a food handler card to work food prep shifts through Shiftsmart. Whether you need one depends on the type of shift you take and the food safety requirements where you’re working.
Shiftsmart is an app-based platform where workers, called partners, can pick up short shifts with different businesses. Those shifts can include merchandising, stocking, audits and inspections, mystery shopping, remote work, and food preparation.
One example is Circle K, where Shiftsmart partners can prepare hot sandwiches and snacks, pizza, roller-grill items, and bakery products inside the store.
Once you are preparing food, the state or local food safety requirements for that location apply.
This article explains where Shiftsmart food prep workers may need a food handler card, how Shiftsmart handles food handler cards in the app, and how to get your card before your first shift.
Where Shiftsmart food prep workers need a food handler card
Food handler requirements come from state and local food safety laws rather than Shiftsmart itself.
Circle K has a large presence in states including Texas, Illinois, Arizona, Ohio, California, and Florida. These states also show how much the requirements can vary.
- Texas — Food employees must complete approved food handler training within 30 days of employment. ANAB-accredited food handler programs are accepted, and an accredited card is recognized statewide.
- Illinois — Food handlers must complete approved training within 30 days. ANAB-accredited programs are accepted. Convenience stores are generally treated as non-restaurant establishments, and Illinois also allows approved internal training programs for these businesses.
- Arizona — Food handler requirements are set at the county level. When an Arizona county requires food handler certification, ANAB-accredited food handler training meets the state standard for approved training.
- Ohio — Ohio does not require every food employee to hold a standard food handler card. Instead, covered retail food establishments must have at least one person per shift with Ohio Person in Charge Certification (PIC) in Food Protection. Higher-risk establishments also have food manager certification requirements.
- California — California’s statewide food handler card law exempts convenience stores. San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties have their own food handler card programs that can still apply.
- Florida — Florida does not apply its standard restaurant food handler training requirement to convenience-store employees. Convenience stores that prepare food operate under a separate system that includes certified food manager requirements.
Other states use their own systems. Washington and Alaska, for example, require state-specific food worker cards rather than a standard ANAB-accredited card from an outside provider.
How Shiftsmart handles food handler cards
Shiftsmart has a food handler card section inside the app.
The screen tells you whether food prep shifts in your area require a card and lets you upload a card you already have.
Shiftsmart accepts several types of food safety certificates through this screen, including a food handler card or food manager certification.
Before working food prep shifts, Shiftsmart also requires partners to complete a food safety acknowledgment. It states that the worker is responsible for obtaining and maintaining a valid food handler card or equivalent certification when required by the local health authority.
So if your state or county requires a card, you are responsible for having it. Shiftsmart gives you a place to upload proof once you do.
If you already have an accepted card when you begin looking for food prep shifts, you can upload it directly to your profile instead of waiting until you encounter the requirement during onboarding.
How to get your food handler card before your first food prep shift
If you know you want to pick up food prep shifts, you can complete food handler training before your first shift.
ANAB-accredited food handler training is accepted in nearly every state that requires this type of training. In many states, the card also stays with you rather than being limited to one employer.
That makes it useful beyond Shiftsmart since the same accepted card can often be used if you pick up shifts through another platform such as Instawork, work directly for Circle K, or take a restaurant job while your card remains valid.
Texas is a good example. An accredited food handler card is recognized statewide, so you do not need a new card each time you change employers.
Illinois handles non-restaurant training differently and ties that training to the employer. A few other states also use their own food handler programs.
For most workers, getting a card is straightforward. You complete an approved training course, pass the required assessment, and receive a card or certificate showing you completed the training.
Course length, price, test format, retakes, and how quickly you receive your card can vary by provider.
FoodSafePal’s food handler training is ANAB accredited and completed entirely online. The course and exam take about 90 minutes total, and your digital food handler card and certificate are available immediately after you pass.

If you manage food operations or move into a leadership role
Food handler training is designed for employees who prepare or handle food. Food manager certification covers food safety at a much deeper level and may be required for employees responsible for managing food operations.
The professional credential is called Certified Food Protection Manager, or CFPM, certification.
To become a certified food manager, you must pass an exam accredited by ANAB under the Conference for Food Protection standards.
Some of the same states discussed above have separate manager requirements.
Arizona counties can require a Certified Food Protection Manager at establishments preparing certain types of food. In Maricopa County, establishments serving open food that requires time and temperature control for safety must have a Certified Food Protection Manager.
Florida convenience stores that prepare food also have certified food manager requirements, including requirements based on how many employees are working with food.
Ohio risk level III and IV retail food establishments must have at least one employee with supervisory and management responsibility who holds manager certification in food protection.
Shiftsmart’s Food Handler Card screen also allows workers to upload a food manager certification.
FoodSafePal’s food manager certification exam is ANAB-CFP accredited and can be taken online from any private, quiet environment using a live remote proctor.
