Do You Need a Food Handlers Card to Work at Wendy’s?
Wendy’s does not have one nationwide food handler card requirement. Whether you need one depends on your state or local laws, the work you perform, and sometimes the franchisee that operates your restaurant.
At Wendy’s, your job title alone may not tell you whether you are considered a food handler. Crew members are commonly cross-trained and may move between the drive-thru, front counter, food preparation, grill, fries, and other stations. Wendy’s also cooks its fresh beef patties on the grill, making safe food handling an important part of many crew positions.
If you handle unpackaged food, utensils, food equipment, or food-contact surfaces, you may be required to complete food handler training.
This article explains where Wendy’s employees may need a food handler card, what individual Wendy’s restaurants may require, and when food manager certification applies instead.
Where Wendy’s employees need a food handler card
Food handler requirements are set by state and local governments rather than Wendy’s nationally.
Wendy’s largest U.S. markets include Florida, Texas, Ohio, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. Those states also show how differently food safety certification can work from one Wendy’s restaurant to another.
- Florida — Wendy’s has more locations in Florida than any other state. Food service employees must complete state-approved food safety training within 60 days of employment. The certification is valid for three years. FoodSafePal’s food handler training is not Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) approved.
- Texas — food employees who work with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or food-contact surfaces must complete accredited food handler training within 30 days of employment.
- Ohio — Ohio does not require every restaurant employee to earn a standard statewide food handler card. Instead, qualifying establishments must have a person with Ohio Person in Charge (PIC) certification on-site during operation, unless a manager-certified person is present.
- California — covered food handlers generally must obtain a food handlers card within 30 days of hire. Certain counties like San Diego have their own food handler training requirements.
- Georgia — Georgia does not require every Wendy’s crew member to obtain a statewide food handler card. Instead, food service establishments must employ a Certified Food Safety Manager with supervisory and management responsibility over food preparation and service.
- Pennsylvania — Pennsylvania does not require a food handler card, but at least one employee at each licensed food facility must hold a nationally recognized food manager certification. Local health jurisdictions, including Philadelphia and several counties, can have additional requirements.
- North Carolina — North Carolina focuses on Certified Food Protection Manager requirements rather than requiring a statewide food handler card for every restaurant employee. When food is being prepared, packaged, or served for immediate consumption, the person in charge generally must demonstrate food safety knowledge by being a Certified Food Protection Manager.
Wendy’s also operates in states with other statewide food handler requirements, including Illinois, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington. Alaska and Washington use their own state-issued food worker card systems, while other states may accept qualifying accredited programs.
A state without a statewide food handler card can still have county or city requirements, so always check the rules for the specific Wendy’s where you plan to work.
What Wendy’s managers typically ask for
Most Wendy’s restaurants in the United States are franchised. At the end of 2025, 5,546 of the company’s 5,969 U.S. restaurants were operated by franchisees, so hiring, training, and certification procedures can vary from one Wendy’s operator to another.
And current Wendy’s job postings show that variation. For example, a California crew member posting requires a food handler certificate according to state or local requirements. An Ohio crew member posting describes employees gaining experience in both customer service and food preparation and using equipment such as the register, headset, and grill. Another Wendy’s posting explains that crew members may be cross-trained at three or more stations.
That means you should not assume you are exempt from food handler requirements simply because you were hired for the front counter or drive-thru. You may be assigned food preparation duties during other shifts.
You also may not need a food handler card before applying or interviewing. States such as Texas, California, and Florida provide time after hire to complete required training.
Still, getting your card beforehand can be useful if you know the credential is accepted where you plan to work. You can list it on your application, mention it during your interview, and start the job with basic food safety training already completed.
How to get your food handler card before your first shift
Start by checking the food handler requirements for the state, county, or city where your Wendy’s is located.
Then, enroll in an accepted food handler program, complete the required training and test, and download or print your card or certificate.
FoodSafePal’s food handler training can be completed entirely online in about 90 minutes. The standard course starts at $15, and your digital food handler card and certificate are available immediately after you pass.
Some states require a specific program. Florida restaurant employees must use DBPR-approved training, while Alaska and Washington issue their own food worker cards. Oregon also requires an Oregon-approved provider.

If you’re a shift manager or restaurant manager at Wendy’s
If you are applying to become a shift manager, assistant manager, general manager, or another employee responsible for directing food preparation and service, food manager certification — professionally known as the Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) credential — may be required.
Most states require at least one certified food manager at every Wendy’s restaurant. To become a certified food manager, you must pass an exam accredited by ANAB under the Conference for Food Protection standards. While training isn’t required to sit for the exam, some states require training in addition to passing the exam.
Ohio is especially important for Wendy’s because it is one of the chain’s largest markets and the company is headquartered there. A typical Wendy’s performs activities Ohio classifies as risk level III, such as handling raw meat and cooking time/temperature control for safety food. Risk level III establishments must have at least one employee with supervisory and management responsibility who has obtained Ohio Manager Certification. Certain establishments also need at least one person with Ohio PIC certification on-site during each shift unless an Ohio Manager-certified person is present.
Florida also has additional requirements for management. Food service managers responsible for food storage, preparation, display, or service must meet Florida’s manager-certification standards, and DBPR requires a certified food service manager to be on duty when four or more employees are engaged in food preparation or handling.
FoodSafePal’s food manager certification exam is ANAB-CFP accredited and can be taken online from any private, quiet environment using remote proctoring.

Frequently asked questions
Does Wendy’s pay for your food handler card?
It depends on the restaurant and where you work.
Because most Wendy’s restaurants are operated by independent franchisees, reimbursement and onboarding procedures can vary by operator.
State law can also determine who pays. In California, for example, restaurant employers must cover the necessary cost of required food handler training and treat the time spent completing the training and examination as compensable work time.
Do I need a food handler card before I apply to Wendy’s?
Usually not. Several states with large numbers of Wendy’s restaurants allow employees to complete required training after they are hired. Texas and California generally allow 30 days, while Florida allows 60 days.
An individual franchisee can still establish its own onboarding requirements, so check the job posting or ask the restaurant if you are unsure.
Can I use any accredited food handler provider?
No. Always check the requirements where you work.
Texas accepts qualifying accredited or state-approved food handler programs, while Florida restaurant employees must use DBPR-approved training. Other states, including Oregon, Alaska, and Washington, have their own provider or card requirements.
An accredited certificate is not automatically accepted in every jurisdiction.
How often do I need to renew my food handler card?
It depends on where you work.
California and Florida food handler credentials are valid for three years, while Texas food handler certificates are valid for two years. Other state or local programs may use different expiration periods.
Check both the expiration date on your credential and the rules where your Wendy’s is located.
The bottom line
You may need a food handler card to work at Wendy’s depending on your location and job duties.
At Wendy’s, do not assume that working the drive-thru or front counter means food handler requirements will not apply to you. Crew members are often cross-trained and may rotate into food preparation, grill, fries, or other kitchen duties.
The rules also differ significantly across Wendy’s largest markets. Texas, Florida, and California have employee-level food safety training requirements, while states such as Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina place greater emphasis on Person in Charge or food manager certification.
If you want to earn your food handler card before applying or starting work, first make sure the training is accepted where your Wendy’s is located.
And if you are applying for a shift management or restaurant management position, check whether you also need Certified Food Protection Manager certification or a state-specific credential.
If FoodSafePal is accepted where you work, you can earn your food handler card online in as little as 90 minutes. FoodSafePal also offers an ANAB-CFP accredited food manager certification exam that you can take online from any private, quiet environment.
