Does Nevada Require a Food Handler Card?

No — Nevada doesn’t have a state food handler law, but many counties and employers require anyone who handles food or works around food-contact surfaces to get a food handler card, usually within 30 days of starting the job. This video explains who needs one, how to get it online, and how to renew it before it expires — all with FoodSafePal.

Common Questions About Getting or Renewing Your Nevada Food Handler Card

To get or renew your Nevada food handler card, just complete the training videos and pass the test. The entire process takes about 90 minutes from start to finish. Your card will be issued instantly after you pass.

Nevada has no law that requires a food handler card to work at a food establishment, but Clark County — also known as the Southern Nevada District — does. Clark County includes Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, and Mesquite.

Even if you don’t work in Clark County, and although Nevada doesn’t mandate it, your employer may still require that you earn a food handler card before or within a certain period of employment.

Additionally, many nursing homes and healthcare facilities rely on food handler training to equip their dietary staff with the knowledge necessary to handle food safely.

Even if it’s voluntary, earning your food handler card can make it easier to land your next gig and earn a higher starting wage.

Your FoodSafePal food handler card will be valid throughout Nevada, except Clark County — also known as the Southern Nevada District — which includes Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, and Mesquite.

Your Nevada food handler card will be issued digitally as soon as you pass the exam. You can download, print, or email it anytime by logging into your account. If you’d like a professionally printed copy mailed to you, you can order one directly from your account.

Your Nevada food handler card is valid for three years from the date you earn it.

Nevada does not require any type of food safety training to sell homemade or cottage food. However, earning an ANAB-accredited Food Handlers Card from FoodSafePal helps build customer trust, expands selling opportunities, and may lower insurance costs. Learn more about Nevada’s cottage food law here.
