How to get your food handler card through FoodSafePal
If you need a food handler card, here’s how fast and straightforward the process is.
Start by finding your state and completing enrollment. The course is available in English and Spanish.
After enrolling, you can begin immediately. Most people learn and test in about 90 minutes.

Once you finish the course, you’ll take a multiple-choice final exam.
If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you can review the course and retake the test.
After passing, you can immediately download, print, or email your food handler card and certificate. It’s valid for three years (two years in Texas).

How to earn your certified food protection manager (CFPM) credential through FoodSafePal
FoodSafePal offers three paths to earning your CFPM credential online — all leading to the same ANAB-accredited certification when the exam is passed.

- Training + Exam Bundle — Complete the training, then take the accredited exam. Best for first-time test takers or those who want the highest level of preparation.
Note that training is optional in most states — but some states, like Ohio, require proof of completed training through a state-approved provider before certification is recognized.
Step 1: Complete the training (if selected)
FoodSafePal’s food manager training is fully video-based with built-in knowledge checks throughout. Most learners finish in approximately five to six hours, though you can move at your own pace.
At the end of the course, you’ll take a 75-question mock exam designed to mirror the format, difficulty, and structure of the actual certification exam. Unlike other programs, FoodSafePal shows you exactly which questions you answered correctly or incorrectly — so you can focus your review where it matters most.
After passing the mock exam, you’ll receive a training certificate of completion, valid for five years. Note that this is not the same as food manager certification — certification is only earned by passing the accredited exam.
Step 2: Take the accredited exam
When you’re ready, take the exam online from any quiet, private location. The exam is administered with live remote proctoring and is closed book — no extra browser tabs, no phone, no notes, and no outside assistance.
The exam includes 70 multiple-choice questions (10 are unscored pilot items) and you have 90 minutes to complete it. Passing score ranges from 68% to 72% depending on the exam form you receive. You get two attempts — if you don’t pass the first time, you must wait 48 hours before retesting.
Step 3: Earn your CFPM credential
Immediately after passing, you earn your Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) credential. Your certificate is issued instantly and is valid for five years.
