Does Arizona Require a Food Handler Card?

No — Arizona doesn’t have a state food handler law, but most counties require anyone who handles food or works around food-contact surfaces to get a food handler card, usually within 30 days of starting the job. This video explains who needs one, how to get it online, and how to renew it before it expires — all with FoodSafePal.

Common Questions About Getting or Renewing Your Arizona Food Handler Card

To get or renew your Arizona food handler card, just complete the training videos and pass the test. The entire process takes about 90 minutes from start to finish. Your card will be issued instantly after you pass.

Arizona has no law that requires a food handler card to work at a food establishment, but many counties require it.

Here are the Arizona counties that require a food handler card:

  • Coconino
  • Gila
  • Greenlee
  • La Paz
  • Maricopa
  • Mohave
  • Pinal
  • Santa Cruz
  • Yavapai
  • Yuma

These counties accept this training as it’s accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

If you live in a county that doesn’t require food handler training like Apache, Cochise, Graham, Navajo, or Pima, your employer may still require it, in part because Arizona strongly encourages it.

While some counties don’t specify when you must obtain your food handler card, most require it before or within 30 days of employment.

Your FoodSafePal food handler card will be valid throughout Arizona, including, but not limited to:

  • Yuma
  • Coconino
  • Gila
  • Greenlee
  • La Paz
  • Maricopa
  • Mohave
  • Pinal
  • Santa Cruz
  • Yavapai

Your Arizona food handler card will be issued digitally as soon as you pass the exam. You can download, print, or email it anytime by logging into your account. If you’d like a professionally printed copy mailed to you, you can order one directly from your account.

Your Arizona food handler card is valid for three years from the date you earn it, unless you work in Yavapai, in which case, it is valid for two years.

Yes, to sell homemade food in Arizona, you must complete an ANAB-accredited food handler training program, such as this training.
