Does Kansas Require a Food Handler Card?

No — Kansas doesn’t have a state food handler law, but some counties and employers require anyone who handles food or works around food-contact surfaces to get a food handler card, usually within 30 days of starting the job. This video explains who needs one, how to get it online, and how to renew it before it expires — all with FoodSafePal.

Great course

07/17/26

Very informative and easy to follow course. Great information and a very to easy follow curriculum. Only reason for the 4 stars is due to the verification process during the exam. If you don’t have the correct browser and this and that it takes forever to get verified. Overall would recommend to anyone

Nelson Rider

Response from FoodSafePal®

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback, Nelson! We’ve updated our enrollment emails to more clearly explain the browser requirements before the exam, which should help prevent the delay you experienced during verification. Congratulations on earning your Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) credential!

Well done training

Common Questions About Getting or Renewing Your Kansas Food Handler Card

To get or renew your Kansas food handler card, just complete the training videos and pass the test. The entire process takes about 90 minutes from start to finish. Your card will be issued instantly after you pass.

Kansas has no state law requiring food handler training, but you are required to earn a food handler card if you live in Leavenworth, Kansas (1).

Still, the Kansas food code requires that food employees know how to handle and serve safely.

For this reason, many food establishments like restaurants, bars, markets, and mobile food trucks require food handler training programs for their employees.

Dietary staff of nursing homes and other healthcare facilities like hospitals must also know how to handle food safely, especially since they serve populations highly susceptible to foodborne illnesses, like older adults and people with compromised immune systems (2).

Your FoodSafePal food handler card will be valid throughout Kansas, including in Clay County, Wichita, and the City of Leavenworth.

If you work in the City of Leavenworth, you must bring your FoodSafePal food handler card to Leavenworth City Hall and pay a fee to receive your City of Leavenworth Food Handler Card.

Your Kansas food handler card will be issued digitally as soon as you pass the exam. You can download, print, or email it anytime by logging into your account. If you’d like a professionally printed copy mailed to you, you can order one directly from your account.

Your Kansas food handler card is valid for three years from the date you earn it.

Kansas has no law requiring food handler training before opening a cottage food business. However, this training is highly recommended as it increases customer’s trust, expands selling opportunities, and may lower insurance costs. Learn more about Kansas’s cottage food law here.
